About

Lora Liegel lives in Bellingham, Washington – the ancestral homelands of the Coast Salish peoples. She lives with her wife and children.

Liegel is the author of Second Parent: a memoir which was initially inspired by an online project to connect with other lesbian/queer, non-biological mothers. Her work has appeared in HuffPost and she has been featured in The Atlantic.

Liegel’s writing draws from her own experiences while connecting to the larger threads of our collective voice. Liegel is continually inspired by the healing powers of nature - plants, water, rock, stone and bone. Liegel is currently working on another memoir which focuses on the inheritance of grief, as a result of her mother’s death in 2019.

Liegel grew up in Corvallis, Oregon where the green grass fields expanded to the horizon and the white swans were heard overhead. Over the course of 20 years, Liegel’s professional work has focused on supporting the Northwest agricultural sector.

Liegel currently works for the Washington State Department of Agriculture where she is leading efforts to create a statewide brand to promote Washington food and agricultural products. She holds an MA in Social Science: Environment and Community from Cal Poly Humboldt; and a BA from Oregon State University.
